The kentucky department of fish and wildlife resources (kdfwr) publishes an annual hunting and trapping guide to aid hunters in the current season. In summer 2023 the dnr estimated the state had 515 elk (355 in the northern herd and 160 in the central), 10% higher than the same time in 2022.
